#1 Head of State

The State of the Union address is an annual tradition in which the President speaks to the nation about our goals and progress.

The President also has to do a number of "symbolic" things for our nation.

Examples of Responsibilities:

  • Awarding medals to the winners of college scholarships
  • Congratulating astronauts on their journey into space
  • Greeting visitors to the White House
  • Making a patriotic speech on the Fourth of July

#2 Chief Executive

The President is the "boss" for millions of government workers in the Executive Branch. He decides how U.S. laws will be enforced and chooses officials and advisors.

Tools of Influence:

  • Executive Orders
  • Appointments & Removal of Appointed Officials
  • Impoundment
  • Reprieves, Pardons & Amnesty

Presidents can "pardon", grant "amnesty" (a pardon for a group of people), or grant "reprieves", which can delay a person's punishment.

One of the most powerful tools of the President is the use of "Executive Orders", which have the force of law.

As an "executive", the President can appoint federal judges, including vacancies on the Supreme Court and to members of the Presidential Cabinet.

#3 Chief Legislator

Watch President Clinton try to convince Congress to pass his job agenda.

With the help of advisers, the President directs foreign policy and can help make key decisions around the globe. (foreign policy tools: treaties, sanctions, etc.) He directs American diplomats and ambassadors on how to interact with foreign governments.

President George W. Bush and Prince Salman bin Abdul Al-Aziz participated and watched sword dancing ceremonies in the United Arab Emirates.

#5 Commander in Chief

President Obama watches with advisors as he gives the order to invade the compound in Pakistan where Osama Bin Laden is suspected to be living.

President George W. Bush gives an address to 25,000 troops in Killeen, Texas. This picture was taken during the Iraq war, when tensions in the Middle East were rising.

#6 Party Leader

What is the message at this rally?

How much power do you really believe the President has to fix the economy?

While the President cannot pass laws, he does have a huge influence on the chance a law may have to get passed by Congress.

The President is generally regarded as the leader of his political party. In this role, he can help other politicians get elected by giving speeches, helping to raise money for their elections, and by giving endorsements.

President George W. Bush delivers his State of the Union Address in 2007, and demands legislation to help change the way America generates electric power.

President Bush's presidency has greatly damaged the view of his party, and made it very unlikely that the Republicans will win much of anything in the 2008 election. As party leader, Bush had hoped to ensure a permanent Republican majority. In fact, he has accomplished the complete opposite.

#7 Economic Leader

Every President tries to help the economy prosper. Voters expect that the President will deal with such problems like taxes, a balanced government budget, unemployment, rising prices, etc.

Head of our military! The President is in charge of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. Generals and Admirals take their orders from the President.
