The Native Americans have survived and thrived in the new world creating their own language, art, oral traditions. Although everything was dramatically changed when the europeans had come.

settlement of Jamestown (1607)

Native Americans were introduced to new things that greatly affected their lives. many stories that were told about myths and origins, now changed when the Europeans arrived and twisted their views on the world.(spread of white mans culture)

The Native Americans used stories and myths in order to explain phenomena such as how the day changed, what caused it to rain and how things came to be. The stories also help with determining social etiquette and traditions. These stories also show how important family and communities or tribes and kinships were to the Native Americans.

  • In Europe, the printing press was introduced by Johannes Gutenberg to the Holy Roman Empire around in 1450
  • The Treaty of Tordesillas was created on June 7, 1494. This was a treaty between Spain and Portugal which "divided the world."
  • The Seven Years war between Great Britain and France, which occured both in Europe and in the colonies

Powhatan Wars (1622-44)

Chief Powhatan(Pocahontas' father) had wrote letters sent to John Smith. He wrote about respect and how he liked to learn new things. after the death of the chief, the wars began. views on the settlers were more hateful and wrote about in mission schools.

Trail of Tears (1838)

the trail of tears was one of the worst things done to the Native Americans.Despite the Supreme court's decision,President Andrew Jackson forcibly removed 16,000 Cherokee Indians. Making them walk 800 miles in brutal weather to Oklahoma. Approximately 5000 Cherokees died from sickness, starvation and exhaustion. The literature started to become soulless and gloomy as soldiers and Cherokees wrote about death, despair, and unimaginable pain that could not be unseen.
