The Greek Priests

Greek Oracles were priests or priestesses. The Ancient Greeks believed that if you wanted information from the gods, an oracle would ask the question for you and tell you what the god or goddess said. They even believed that the oracle could tell you what the god or goddess said about the future. First, though, you would have to get to know the priest before you asked the question.

How Religion was Important to the Ancient Greeks

Ancient Greeks believed that their gods would take care of them when they died. They believed that religion would make their own lives better. The Greeks believed that the gods controlled the environment around them and their whole lives. Ancient Greeks prayed and gave gifts to their gods. It was important to please the gods because if a god was not happy with you, he or she would punish you. However, if a god was happy with you, he or she would help you.

Greek beliefs

Greek Religion was a mixture of other countries' religions. Some of the beliefs the that the Ancient Greeks had were based off of Minoan beliefs, and some of the gods they believed in were Asian gods. The Gods the Ancient Greeks Believed in

Zeus was the leader of the gods. He could throw lightning bolts, and he could make himself look and sound like anyone. Poseidon was Zeus's brother. He was the god of the sea and he was worshiped by the seamen. His wife was named Amphitrite. His weapon was a trident, and it could shake the earth. Hades was the brother of Zeus, and he had a helmet that made him invisible. He was the god of the underworld, and he ruled over the dead. Aphrodite was the wife of Hephaestus, and was the god of love, desire, and beauty. The dove, swan, and sparrow were her birds. There were more gods and goddesses.

So as you see, the Ancient Greeks had very different beliefs. The ideas they had about the world made them very interesting. The gods they thought were real are not real, but it is still very interesting to see what the Ancient Greeks believed about them. I hope you learned a lot about ancient greek religion...
