Treatment

What is FMD?

1. Percutaneous Transluminal Angioplasty

2. Surgical Revascularization

3. Medications

  • Headaches
  • Ringing/swishing noise in ears
  • lightheadedness
  • Severe FMD can cause stroke or TIA
  • FMD of carotids may also present with dissection which causes symptoms of ministroke and sudden onset of neck pain

Who is Affected by FMD?

Uncommon disorder characterized by abnormal cellular growth in the walls of medium and large arteries.

-Has been found in nearly every arterial bed

- Most commonly found in renal artery (60-75%)

- Also commonly found in carotids (~30%)

- Can also affect arteries of the extremities

Etiology

Renal Symptoms

  • Most common in women between 30 & 50
  • Affects women 2-10 times more frequently than men
  • Children and elderly can also be affected
  • No female predominance in children
  • Renovascular hypertension
  • Abdominal/flank pain
  • Abdominal bruit
  • Causes Are still unknown

-Possible hormonal influence since woman of childbearing age primarily affected.

-Possible genetic factors

- Internal mechanical stress

-Loss of O2 supply to vessel wall
