Existentialism in Kafka's, The Metamorphosis

By

Gabe Ramirez and Ralphs (Raul Valladares)

Existentialism:

A philosophy that emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of the individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe, regards human existence as unexplainable, and stresses freedom of choice and responsibility for the consequences of one's acts.

Thesis:

Franz Kafka Bio:

Born July 3, 1883 in a Jewish ghetto of Prague, son of Hermann and Julie. As a kid he was a charming and energetic kid. As Franz grew up, his relationship with his father became worst due to the denial of the intellectual and physical shape of young Franz. He also blamed himself for his bad relationship with his dad. His way to express the bad relationship with his dad was throught writing; which he believed to be a curse.

The meaning of Existentialism in The Metamorphosis:

At the beggining of the story, "Gregor Samsa awoke... found himself transformed.. Heavenly Father! It was half past 6 o-clock. ", even after he wakes up and realizes that he is a vermain, his first worry is being late to work! His devotion to work is greater than himself which clearly shows his lack of identity and self-awereness.

Another example of existentialism in The Metamorphosis:

" It showed a lady fitted out with a fur hat and a fur boa that sat upright.. towards the viewer.." This is shown where he is looking around his room and he comes across the picture of a relatively good-looking woman and stares at it wishing that he had a chance of a realationship but never having the oppurtunity due to his responsibilty to work for the family.

Summary:

According to Kafka and existentialism, people have both an individual side and a side with the commitment of society. It is our choices that must be in moderation of the two, to maintain balance. If a person chooses himself over society, he will loose the support of society; however, if a person chooses society, he will lose his individuality. Kafka's early child hood and his dad greatly impacted his work not only throught literature but also the way he lived his life.
