Maze

The Maze Runner Map

Gardens

Slammer

Homestead

The Glade

Located in the northeast corner, the Gardens are where they grow their crops. Without this, all of the Gladers would starve. Thomas spends a day working here while he is testing out all the jobs to find the right fit. He meets Zart, the Keeper of the Gardens. Thomas has so many questions; yet, no one would answer them. Well, Zart did. He was openly honest and glad to reply to Thomas's ongoing questions. Even though working in the Gardens was tough and Thomas knew he wasn't cut out for that job, he gained Zart's friendship that day. Zart even voted in Thomas's favor later in the story at a Keeper meeting when some were aginst him.

The Slammer is a small prison that usually only houses one person at a time. It is located behind the Homestead. Both Thomas and Teresa get put in here. Thomas is put in the Slammer for breaking the Gladers' number one rule: going into the maze when you're not a runner. Even though Thomas survives the night in the maze and saves Alby in the process, he is still punished. He is placed in the Slammer for one day. Teresa is also put in the Slammer later in the book. She is put there because they feel she is responsible for the bad turn of events. Teresa somehow triggered the Ending and now the Glade was suffering the apocalypse.

The Homestead is a messily built wooden building in the northwest corner of the Glade. In the beginning of the story, Thomas has his first confrontation with Gally here. Thomas wants to go upstairs, but Gally won't let him. This leads to the ongoing hatred and rivalry between them throughout the rest of the book. The Homestead also houses all of the Gladers towards the end of the book. The doors are not closing and the they need a safe haven from the Grievers when night falls. They soon realize, though, that the Grievers will take one person every night no matter what they do.

The Box

The Box is a...well it's a box. It is located in the center of Glade and sends supplies up once a week. Once a month, it delivers a new person to live in the Glade. One of the main events we see here in the story is when Teresa arrives. All are baffled by this situation for many reasons. First, Teresa is the only girl to ever arrive in the Glade. Second, she arrives in a coma. Most are conscious when they exit the box. Finally, she comes just a day after Thomas. As I said, box deliveries come once a week for supplies and once a month for people. This perplexes everyone.

West Door

East Door

The Doors

There are four doors leading to the maze from the Glade (North, East, South, and West). These doors close every night to protect the Gladers from the Grievers. However, when the Ending is triggered, the doors stop closing. Panic ensues. How would they be safe from the Grievers now? The answer was simple. They wouldn't. From then on, the Grievers would come into the Glade every night and take one boy.

Map Room

Located in front of the South Door, the Map Room is concrete structure with no windows. Only the Runners are allowed access to this building. They come here at the end of every day and draw up maps of what they say out in the Maze. Thomas longs to know what lies inside this mystical building. Later, when he finally becomes a Runner, his wish is granted. Yet, as he enters the Map Room, a feeling a disappointment washes over him. It is a very simple room with one table, eight chairs, eight trunks, and no decoration. Still, Thomas quickly gets over this emotion and gets to work.

Deadheads

Blood House

The Cliff

Located in the southeast corner of the Glade, the Blood House is where they cultivate and slaughter their animals. Winston is the Keeper and Thomas feels uneasy about him. The only time we ever see an event at the Blood House is when Thomas spends the day here testing out jobs. He is horrified by Winston's slaughtering and promises to never work here. He also vows to never again eat anything made from pig.

The Deadheads are a thick forest of trees in the southwest corner. Towards the beginning of the book Thomas wanders off back here. He ends up confronting Ben, who is mentally unstable from the Changing. Ben forcefully grabs Thomas and tries to kill him, but luckily Alby comes to the rescue. He fires an arrow straight into Ben's head, ceasing the madness. This event haunts Thomas's thoughts for a long time following.

The Cliff is sharp and sudden drop in the middle of the Maze. The drop is so high that you cannot see the bottom and no one has survived the jump. Minho and Thomas use this to their advantage to escape the Grievers. They stand in front of the Cliff and dive out of the way right as the Grievers are about to get them. This causes them to slide right off the Cliff into oblivion.

Graveyard

The Graveyard is placed deep into the Deadheads, away from public view. Thomas comes across it chasing a beetle blade into the Deadheads. He is saddened by the amount of graves and the stories behind them. One of the stones read, "Let this half shank be a warning to all: You can't escape through the Box Hole." Before the stone lay a half-carcaus severed clean around the waist.

The Griever Hole

The Griever Hole is an invisible doorway to the Grievers' "home." It is located just a few feet from the edge of the Cliff. Minho and Thomas find this spot by throwing rocks off the Cliff in every area and seeing that the rocks "disappear" in that spot. The discovery of the Griever Hole leads to the escape from the Maze they've been searching for the past two years.
