Once upon a time, there lived a princess of Mexica, today known as Mexico. Her name was Itza. She and her pet deer always went to the mountains and explored. One day, her deer led her to a secret grove covered in beautiful flowers. When she was at the grove one day, she was surprised to find another human there. He was a poor warrior named Popo, whom she immediately fell in love with. They wanted to get married, so they went to Itza’s father to ask for his blessing, but he said that Popo had to become an eagle warrior, one of the hardest achievements to earn, to get his blessing. So, Popo goes off to become an eagle warrior. Now, there is an evil man in the king’s court, who wants to be king. He also wants to have Itza for himself. He thought that Popo would die in trying to become an eagle warrior, but he doesn’t. He becomes an eagle warrior and is traveling back. The evil man gets desperate, and tells her that Popo has died. Itza is heartbroken, and goes to the secret grove and cries until her heart explodes! Popo finds her in the grove and begs the gods to bring her back. They won’t, and Popo gets so mad, that he turns into a volcano. Itza is turned into a mountain, and Popo watches over her to this day.
