SIKHISM FESTIVALS

Diwali

-Occurs on April13th or 14th

-Purpose: celebrate the imprisonment & release of Guru Har gobind (the sixth Guru)

-Took place in the 1600s

Gurpurbs

-The word "Gurpurb" means "holy day in honor of the Guru"

-Most important part: reading Guru Granth Sahib from beginning to end without stopping. This is called an Akhand Path

The Birth of Guru Nanak

-Most important Gurpurb

- Purpose: to celebrate Guru Nanak's birth

-Celebrated by having processions through the streets led by representatives of Panj Piare;

-There are offerings of fruits and sweets to one another

-People who follow the procession sing hymns

In Sikhism there are 2 types of festivals:

Hola Mohalla

-Occurs in spring

-Purpose: Sikh's gather to practise their martial skills

-Mainly celebrated in Punjab; not common elsewhere in the world

-Gurpurbs

-Jore Melas

Whats the difference?

Gurpurbs: celebrate the death and birth of gurus.

Jore Melas: provide opportunities for Sikhs to gather together.

-Purpose: To honor the Saint-Soldiers who we prepared to fight against injustice.

-Day of giving thanks to God and listening to the Guru's teachings.

-Sikh's gather in Amritsar, India.

-Amritsar Massacre: hundreds of Sikh's killed when they gathered in defiance of authorities.
