What is a dystopia?

The term and theme is used often in media, but what is it?

Dystopia by Hamlet

Janet Murray gives examples of dystopian society and they have things in common.

tech overtakes everyday life

people can't tell real from fake

it's always over the top

lack of empathy

A dystopia isn't real, it along with utopias are extremes of what technology can bring. Dystopia is bad and utopia is good.

Lawnmower Man

Does that still work?

Technology has come a long way since some of these dystopian media. Some of Murray's examples came 20 years before the first social media sites.

The New Dystopia

This dystopia is not a theory, it's real. While it is not a true dystopia, it is dystopian like.

This is not a dystopia, but it is closer to what a dystopia would be than it ever should have been allowed to be.

What makes this new dystopia

There are three things I believe help make this dystopia: Social Media, Video games, good old Human Stupidity.

The Dystopia we live in.

by Donald Ray Jahadhmy Jr.

Social Media:

The case of Daniel Petric

and the mindset it reveals

Daniel Petric killed his mother and tried to kill his father over a video game. everyone was quick to play the blame game.No one cared about the lives affected by this event, they just wanted to blame everything. Empathy means nothing these days

Video Games: She was right!

Trolling: legacy of the internet

Trolling, the pass time of many on the internet. It is most common on social media

Some women threatened for having opinions ex. GamerGate, SWATed families of women

Out right delusion

"All the representational arts can be considered dangerously delusional". The effects of things like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto provide plenty of proof to this claim.

The line between virtual and reality

People feel less of a need to filter themselves, despite their words having far more weight.

This man is Nash, he once saw an armored truck and though if he had to steal it for a mission.

Bus stolen by 9 year old in PJs

For some people always telling the difference between games and the real world AFTER playing the game is difficult or impossible. Surprising amounts of stories where kids play GTA and then try to drive a real car.

Much like a game you're looking at a screen when dealing with social Media, it's easy to forget that these people are real

Multi-choice stories

Thanks to interactive stories people, emotions, and events seem real despite being fake. This can lead people to have delusions of the real world.

Gaming emotions made real

People seem incapable of leaving emotions in the games. The delusional gamer's favorite pass time: SWATing

SWATing: calling the police on innocent people over video games
