Genocide or Holocaust?

Genocide

  • Both are mass killings and threats against human lives
  • Usually started due to ethical, racial or religious reasons
  • Genocide is a more modern term
  • "Holocaust" refers specifically to Adolf Hitler's actions towards Jews
  • All are worthy of punishment

Darfur: started in 1989

Claimed lives of 400,000 people

More than 1 hundred people died each day

~Syria: still in poverty

250,000 dead, 1,000,000 injured and 500,000 starving

~Bosnia: deaths of 100,000 people by 1995

International Laws

The Preamble states:

Article I: Anyone who commits genocide is punishable under international law

Article II: Genocide can be anyone attempting to murder an ethnical or religious group

Article III: Any type of genocide, whether it's an an attempt or a conspiracy is punishable.

Article IV: Anyone who takes part in the genocide whether they had a minor or major role in the event can be punished for helping.

Genocide in Rwanda

-100 days of slaughter (April 6, 19994 - Mid July 1994

-Hutu turned on the Tutsi

-an estimated 800,000 Tutsis died

-Tutsi 10% Hutu 90%

-Mainly killed with hand weapons

-Genocide ended when RPF took control (Rwandan Patriotic Front)
