Received Pronunciation (RP) is the most known spoken English in the world, yet only 2% of the UK population speak it. It is not present in a lot of other english spoken countries and is might be losing it’s prestige status in Wales. The British Library states that it should properly be described as an English, rather than a British accent. (Received Pronunciation)
(RP) pronounces h at the beginning of words, such as heart and head. A lot of british accents pronounce words like car and heart with an audible r; RP is one of the few accents that leaves out the pronunciation of the ‘r’. (Nordquist, R. )
However, it is considered the standard English accent. This isn't because it was the most popular, but because it was the accent used by those on the first BBC Radio broadcasts.
RP has been used as prime examples of this by depicting the speakers as villains in, for example, Disney's films The Lion King and Tarzan. (Nordquist, R. )
RP is commonly referred to as ‘typically British’. Also some popular terms for this accent, are ‘The Queen’s English’, ‘Oxford English’ or ‘BBC English. The royal family and some people of winchester, oxford, and cambridge speak this accent. (Received Pronunciation)
According to a BBC Article, "Unlike other UK accents, it's identified not so much with a particular region as with a particular social group, although it has connections with the accent of Southern England." (BBC)
It's believed that the making of a new accent happened because of the merging of other regional accents in one close area. The accents that were distinct in northern and western England had come to breed the Received Pronunciation.
