Specific Heat of Water

importance?

Real Life Examples

Temperature?

Why is this important?

Focusing on: what does it mean and why is water’s specific heat important?

The high specific heat capacity of water has a great deal to do with regulating extremes in the environment.

Simply, it takes a lot of heat to it to make it get hot.

COOL EXPERIMENT TIME:

Water: has to absorb 4.184 Joules of heat for the temperature of one gram of water to increase 1 degree Celsius (°C).

Think of Temperature like rubber bands

Copper: 0.385 Joules of heat to raise 1 gram of copper 1°C

Specific Heat?

Can specific heat of water still help in other forms of matter?

sprinklers

on vineyards

Questions:

What is Temperature?

1. Can you think of any other phase change systems like the "vineyard - water - air system", that specific heat of water might affect?

copper coat

-originates at the tip of Florida, and follows the eastern coastlines of the United States and Newfoundland before crossing the Atlantic Ocean to Europe

It is a measure of vibration of atoms.

"-the oldest and thickest Arctic sea ice is disappearing at a faster rate than the younger and thinner ice at the edges of the Arctic Ocean’s floating ice cap." - NASA

2. What does specific heat have to do with this phenomenon?

Strong rubber bands = high specific heat (a lot of energy to get the atoms to vibrate that much) and wimpy rubber bands = low specific heat (less energy required to get atoms to vibrate that much).

Liquid to solid - exothermic

Solid to liquid - endothermic

What is Specific Heat?

Higher temperature means more vibration of the atoms.

Amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 g of a substance by 1 degree Celsius
