Importance of nature

Throughout the whole movie of “WALL E" importance of nature is shown. The movie is about Eve and WALL-E trying to keep the small plant WALL-E safe. The humans had not cared for nature before they wanted to go back to Earth. At the end of the movie all of the humans end up becoming fond of the plant and start to get interested in farming. This movie shows how humans are without nature, very lazy and wanting to be waited on constantly.

This quote refers to the importance of nature by meaning that there is too much good in the world for the humans to sit back and not do anything with it. Nature makes up our world. Without nature, many resources would not be able to be made and there would be no lives. This quote compares to “WALL E" because once the humans realized that nature was important, they went to work and used it to the best of their benefit.

“Though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson, Self-Reliance

Self reliance

SIMPLIFIED LIFE

"I went into the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life" -Henry David Thoream, "Walden"

“That a true man belongs to no other time or place, but is the center of things. Where he is there is nature. . . . Every true man is a cause.."

Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Self-Reliance”

The Amish is one example of people who like to live simply and naturally. They do not use technology, they separate themselves from reality, and they practice their religion on their own. Mostly all Amish people separate themselves from reality because they believe there is too much sin in the world and that it is the work of the devil.

This quote is very similar to the simplicity of life. Thoream believed that to have a simple life, it was to live with only the necessities needed for life. He did not fully believe that you had to study different beliefs than others but he did believe that you should not follow in all of society's footsteps. The Amish do exactly this, they do not follow in society's footsteps and they only participate in their own natural lives.

In the famous TV show “Man Vs. Wild," Bear Grylls portrays how to be self reliant in nature situations. He shows how to survive with nothing but nature and several supplies in his book bag. He uses nature to show a type of self reliance because no matter what, nature has all of your necessities. Nature includes water, food, and even materials you can use for sleeping.

The quote above from Emerson's “Self Reliance" shows similarity in self reliance and in nature because it states, “Where he is there is nature." This quote goes along with “Man Vs. Wild" because Bear is constantly in nature being self reliant on himself. He uses nature as his only resource and shows the world how to be completely self reliant on yourself.

Favoring intuition over Reasoning

Five Tenets of Transcendentalism

“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”

― Henry David Thoreau, Walden:

Justin Bieber's movie “Never Say Never" portrays the favoring intuition over reasoning tenet very well. The whole movie is based on how Justin came from singing on the streets for tips to becoming an internationally known pop artist. During the movie, he talks about how many record labels rejected him and told him that he would not be very popular. He ignored their comments and kept working hard. The very well known pop/ R&B artist, Usher, decided to give Justin a chance. From that point on, Justin has been on the list for the most listened to songs in the nation.

Transcendentalism Project

  • Nonconformity- Failure/refusal to be exactly as reality wants you to be
  • Self Reliance- Depending on only oneself for all needs
  • Importance of nature- Being closer to nature makes you closerto God
  • Favoring intuition over Reasoning- Following your dreams, even if people tell you not to
  • Simplified life- To live naturally

This quote shows favoring intuition over reasoning by giving the motive that if one does not give up, that he will gain success. There will always be individuals who tell you that you are not good enough, but keep working hard. The end result will be worth your hard work. Justin's movie goes along with this quote because even when he was told no, he never gave up on his dreams. Now Justin is very well known and it is all because he never gave up and kept working hard.

Nonconformity

“Is it so bad then to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.”

– Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Self-Reliance”

The quote from Emerson's “Self Reliance" shows nonconformity because society believes being different is weird. But in Emerson's beliefs, being misunderstood or considered weird is great. Buddy is misunderstood and considered to be weird but in the end, he has the biggest heart out of everyone in the movie.

The movie “Elf" is an example of nonconformity because Buddy is a human who ends up in the North Pole as a baby and is raised to be an elf. Whenever he is old enough to realize that he is not an elf, Papa Elf tells him that his real father lives in New York City. Buddy then travels to New York on the search for his dad. He is dressed as an elf throughout the whole movie, which causes people to think he is weird. Buddy's birth father misunderstands Buddy because Buddy claims that he is from the North Pole. At the end of the movie, Buddy's father realizes that he is really from the North Pole when he helps Santa lift his sleigh.
