Conflicts

Plot

There are three main types of conflicts within the story

  • Person vs Person- In this story Andy is a "Royal" and the others are "Guardians" this shows two opposing sides that are constantly at battle even though it is not actually two different people. If the Guardians were not in this story Andy would not have gotten stabbed or have died. Andy's thought were that the only real enemy in my life were the Guardians and that is what got him killed.

  • Person vs Society- Everyone refers to Andy as a "Royal" and does not see him as anyone else besides that even though Andy is just a boy who got caught in the wrong crowd, society views him as all the bad things that the "Royals" have ever done which Andy may not eben have any knowledge of.

  • Person vs Self- Andy in his final moments understands that he no longer wants to be a "Royal" and wants to die himself, Andy. Andy understands that he should not have had to die like this and regrets the decision of ever joining the "Royals"

Character traits of Andy

This short story was about a young man named Andy who is part of a street gang known as the Royals had stabbed and left him to bleed out in an Alley where no one can hear him. Throughout the story he is conflicted with himself, wondering if the only reason he was stabbed was because of the Royals jacket he was wearing. While he was left on the ground a drunk man found him at first but was too intoxicated to understand that he was seriously injured and the other two were a couple who understood that if they helped him the enemy gang known as the guardians would hunt them down and punish them for interfering. Andy would have been able to call for help if it was not for the loud crashing rain that had been muting all other sound in the area. In the end he died trying to be himself after using his strength to toss the jacket away from him. Even after death he was still classified as a "Royal."

  • Andy was a Caring person
  • Andy was Prideful
  • Andy was Innocent

"That's for you, Royal"

Suspense, Irony and Symbolism

Theme

Narrative Point of View

Stay True to Yourself

The Point of View is First Person because during the story Andy does not know he is dying and is telling you his story before he dies. After he dies the POV changes to 3rd person limited because Andy is no longer telling the story and the no one is using the word "I" anymore.

The theme is basically that you should stay true to yourself because even after all that Andy had been through because of himself being a "Royal", he stayed true to who he was and died showing that he was Andy not just another fatality of gang violence.

In this story the suspense is wondering if Andy will really die a "Royal" or if he will live long enough to throw away the jacket and propose to Laura (his Girlfriend)

Irony- the form of Irony is Situational because after Andy throws off the jacket hoping to die himself instead of a "Royal" and dies there. The police officer that begins writing notes on the murder begins the page with "a Royal"

Symbolism- The name Andy means brave, Andy was a brave boy who stood up for what he believed in even until his final moments. He understood that the only reason he was targeted was because of his jacket and that it never would have happened if the word "Royals" was not on it.
