Margaret was known for her surveys of the literature of animal psychology that showed up in her successive editions in her book The Animal Mind for over quarter of the century her book remained the standard text in comparative psychology. .

Margaret's other contributions were in her minor studies in which 68 studies were done. these studies were conducted at the psychology laboratory of Vassar college and these studies were then published between the years 1905 and 1938

Who is Margaret Washburn?

Her work Ethic

Margaret Washburn was born in New York City on July 25 1871. At the age of 16 she began college entering the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. by 1981 she had graduated, she studied briefly at Columbia University in New York. Due to the fact that women were not allowed entry at this time she entered the class as a "Hearer" (An observer). After about a year she decided to leave so she could actually get a degree. Margaret

decided to apply to the Sage School of Philosophy at

Cornell University. At the university she was the

first graduate student who was recommended to the

Ph.D program, this then lead her to become the first

women to obtain a Ph.D in psychology in 1894. In the year

1937 on March 17 Margaret suffered a cerebral brain

hemorrhage, on October 29 1939 she had died at the age of

69.

Margaret's Branch of Discipline

Margret mainly studied animal behavior, she thought it was to be argued that their behaviour could be studied along side with their mental state, in the book The Animal mind she outlined experiments in psychology, consciousness and behaviour. It was said that she examined over 100 different animals species in her study. She was so interested in the mental state that she discovered that it could be studied through visible behavior. This then lead her to study motor development in which she said that "I thought conscious thought was evident in behaviour. Mental functions produce physical reactions. In my book I talked of my theory of regarding correlation between mental processes and motor skills. I believed psychology should include the study of behaviour and consciousness. I wanted to blend introspections and behaviourism."

Important theories

Margaret was known as a notable teacher due to the fact that she worked in many fields of psychology. She has also made contributions to theory development (this including her motor theory), experimental work, animal behavior and her professional services. she worked mostly in the field of behaviourism .

Interesting facts

* She was president of the American Psychological Association in 1921

*she co-edited the American Journal of Psychology, from 1921 to 1939

*She was elected to the select Society of Experimental Psychologists in 1929

Margaret Washburn began to develop her theory of consciousness at greater length, not only that but she also explored more diverse topics including individual difference like colour vision in animals, aesthetic preferences for colours and sounds, after-images and psychology of the affective processes these theories are scattered among her more then 70 research articles written at Vassar.

Reasons why she is such a significance contributor to the social sciences

I believe Margaret was known to be such a significant psychologist not only because of her various findings and recordings but also because she still pursued what she was passionate about even if she her gender caused her to be ineligible for most of the things she wanted an example being the school she wanted to attended. Due to this persistence and her constant hope for the future she has now become one of the most famous and well known psychologist of all time.
