What were the terms of treaty?

  • Austria had to accept the break up and separation of the empire and the independence of Czechoslovakia.
  • Austria was forbidden to unite with other countries (even Germany) without the approval of the League of Nations
  • Was forced to pay reparations but was never able to due to the loss of land, industry, and the collapse of the Bank of Vienna in 1922.

What were the consequences of treaty?

  • Army was limited to 30,000 volunteers
  • Austria disagreed to the treaty because self-determination was not applied to Austria itself, however, Austrians had no choice but to accept the terms.
  • The small cultural groups were not taken into consideration when agreeing about government and politics were difficult as when the borders were set up.

Afterward... Austria went bankrupt before the amount of reparations were set.

Which Countries contributed and how?

Why did this treaty get signed?

The main aim was to sort out the chaotic territories and it was not intending to be about punishing Austria. This Treaty separated Austria and Hungary from one another.

The signatories of The Treaty of Saint-Germain were Austria, the British Empire, France, Italy, Japan and United states.

These countries were the ones that endorsed the Treaty, however it didn't affect the allies.

Countries like Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, etc. were affected and influenced. Austria and Hungary got split. Czechoslovakia gained independence together with other countries of the empire.

How was the Treaty connected to other events?

The Treaty of Saint Germain was closely related to the Treaty of Trianon. This is because the Treaty of Saint Germain was for the Austrian part of Austria-Hungary while the Treaty of Trianon was for the Hungarian portion of Austria-Hungary.

This Treaty also marked the end of the Habsburg empire. Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary, the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes gained independence. Galicia, Trento, southern Tirol, Trieste, and Istria were also given up.
