A region is an area of the earth's surface with similar characteristics.
A Perceptual Region is a region in which people perceive, or see, the characteristics of a region in the same way. However, the set of characteristics may not be perceived precisely the same way for all people!
Regions usually have more than one characteristic that unifies them. These may include physical, political, economic, or cultural characteristics.
Geographers categorize regions in three different ways:
FORMAL
FUNCTIONAL
PERCEPTUAL (vernacular)
Remember this!
Perceptual regions are based on human feelings and attitudes about areas and are defined by people’s shared subjective images or "PERCEPTIONS."
For Example:
Characterized by a common human property, such as the presence of people who share a language, religion, nationality, political identity, or culture; or it is characterized by a common physical property, such as the presence of a type of climate, land form, or vegetation.
REMEMBER THIS!
Formal regions are based on MEASURABLE DATA.
Therefore formal regions can be proven to exist!
A region that is made up of different places that are linked and function as a unit.
Remember this!
For Example:
Usually a functional region is characterized by a hub, or a central place, and links to that central place.
