Jacques Cartier

Samuel De Champlain

Jacques Cartier was born in Saint Malo. Jacques Cartier 1491-1557 was a french navigator. His exploration established the basis for France which is now called Canada. In 1535 he led the first European journey up the st.Lawerence river.

Samuel e Champlain was Born in Brouage, France around the year 1567. He became on of the most important explorers in North America. Samuel was an explorer who found the Canadian city of Quebec. In 1603, Champlain sailed to Canada and explored the St.Lawerence for the king. He also explored and wrote about Niagara Falls.

How he was helpful

Who was worse? Samuel De Champlain or Jacques Cartier?

How he was helpful

Cartier wanted to create a friendship with the Huron, and did want to trade with them, giving them metal in return for fur. In fact the native who saw the interaction were so impressed with the metal that they literally went back to the village and promised to return the next day with more fur. Really, the only problem was that Cartier planted a cross in the name of France, claiming the land. Which did not really please the chief of the land because that land was actually there's. Another problem trading. Donacona had acquired a gun but some point he broke the gun and had asked for a new one.

Samuel De Champlain made successful contact with native canadians. He even agreed to join the Huron as part of their war party and in an attack aganist their enemy, the Iroquois in the Mohawk Valley in 1615.

When he met the First Nations

When He met the First Nations

Jaques Cartier is worse than Samuel De Champlain. That's because there was some land and it was the First Nations but Jacques Cartier planted a cross to claim that it is his. He planted the cross where New York is now days. He said that this land is now the king of France which is now Canada. Samuel De Champlain is better than Jacques Cartier. That's because he didn't plant a cross on the First Nations land.

At first Aboriginal people were friendly but many became mean when they understood that there old way of life could not survive with the arrival of so many strangers. The struggle to establish peace and understanding between the people if the First Nations and the European settlers has continued during the man centuries since Cartiers arrival.

Champlain very friendly with the Algonquin and Quebec. In 1609, this group worked together to defeat Iroquois who lived in what now is called New York. It didn't hurt that Champlain and all his group members had musketeers while the Iroquois knew nothing about firearms. In keeping the explorer tradition.
