The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) Association puts the well-being of animals first. The association is against the use of animals for human benefit, such as in the departments of food and clothing. They stress the significance of treating animals well, for they, like us, are also living beings. PETA exposes those who are abusive to animals. The organization is willing to go to extremes to even further discourage the obstruction of nature (animals) conducted today. Now, PETA is the largest animal rights group worldwide with over three million members in total.
Although technology today is very advanced, people of the Amish culture choose not to partake in it. They keep their lives very simplistic, as if they are living in a time period that took place a few centuries ago. The Amish communities (which are typically in the midwest and eastern coast of the United States) use horse-drawn buggies instead of cars and dress in very plain clothing. The Amish do not use any form of electronics, such as cell phones. They have chosen to live basic lifestyles that separate them from the rest of the world, similar to how transcendentalists isolated themselves back in the day. There are plenty of television series showcasing lives of the Amish, such as "Breaking Amish."
"Instead of three meals a day, if it be necessary eat but one; instead of a hundred dishes , five; and reduce other things in proportion."
-Henry David Thoreau, Walden
Larry Page and Sergey Brin founded Google in 1998 while they were in college. In the early months of 1999, however, they became concerned that their newly-developed search engine was distracting them too much from their schoolwork. As years went by, they took risks by selling parts of the company in stocks. This wouldn't be a reasonable decision to make, but because the company became successful, the founders' favoring of intuition over reason truly paid off. Because of this risk-taking, Larry Page is financially well off with a net worth of approximately 28.7 billion.
"Do not lose hold of your dreams or aspirations. For if you do, you may still exist but you have ceased to live."
-Henry David Thoreau
"The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship"
-Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nature
In the book Hatchet, an adolescent boy gets lost in the woods by himself and is forced to survive on his own. The boy, named Brian, must deal with his own inner conflicts as well as the necessities for survival. This takes him away from his average life, in which he was able to have said necessities accessible at all times. Brian crashes on a plane and is left with nothing but mere clothing items and a hatchet. It gives Brian a new experience that he must now learn to trust his own instincts to get what he needs to eat and drink, all while dealing with the unpredictable elements of the wild.
American Horror Story takes television to a whole new level, almost creating its own new and distinguishable genre. "AHS" blends unsettling horror with intense drama within its plot. Instead of continuing the same storyline from season to season, AHS creates a new plot, setting, and implements new characters with the start of each new season. In this way, each season can be thought of as a miniseries. The themes and setup of the show are something that television hasn't encountered before, thus creating the sense of noncomformity. Also, the creators' genius has not gone unnoticed. The show is critically acclaimed and has won awards, and was the biggest first-season hit in the history of the FX channel.

"Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
Transcendentalists were the free thinkers seeking truth in human relationships in a time of transition in their country. They laid the foundations for future American philosophers and creative artists.
"In every great work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts: they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty."
-Henry David Thoreau
