In the year 1805, the Arikara met with Lewis and Clark. At the time, the tribe was friendly towards Americans, but due to the strife placed upon them by trading companies, were hostile.
In 1823, the Arikara attacked three trader boats, killing thirteen men. This led to the Arikara War, a series of conflicts lasting about two years.
The Arikara believe that at one point all living things were in the womb of Mother Earth, and were given life by Corn Mother. After being born onto the surface of the earth, the people began to migrate west. While crossing through rivers, forests, and cliffs, some of the people became deer, fish, bears, birds, moose, and other animals. The remaining humans met with Corn Mother in a beautiful land where she guided them in farming and prayer for the rest of her life. Upon her death, she gave the people the corn plant as a reminder that her spirit will always be there to guide them.
The Arikara are a small tribe which originated in the Loup River Valley in Kansas. They then migrated to South Dakota.
