Witch Trials In Massachusetts

The Puritans Are Still Punishing The Quakers

September 6th. 1620

  • The Mayflower, a small 100 foot boat, departed from Plymouth, England, with 102 passangers on board.

The English Parliament passes the Wool Act. This is protecting its own wool industry by, limiting wool production in Ireland and, forbidding the shipment of wool from the American colonies.

One event that happened in present day America at this time was when Jamestown was founded. One-hundred men, both young and old settled in Virginia in 1607. They landed in a swampy area, with no fresh clean water to drink. Many died from disease, and some died from starvation. Back then, Virginia was a horrible place to live.

The Great Puritan Migration Settlement

The Puritans continue to punish, kill, and banish the Quakers. If a Quaker decided not to leave the colony, the Puritans would hang them. They were trying to release Quakers back to England if they were not in prison. By the end of the year, every Quaker was in England, even if they were in prison.

Many people were crushed, hanged, and beaten to death because they were witches. It all started with the daughter of Mr. Samuel Parris became ill. The doctor said she was needed to have the withes cure. Mr. Parris did not believe the doctor, and he hung him.

Actually, he hung him, beat him, and crushed

him. Many other witches died also.

Some say that even if you believed in witches and in their work, you would be hung.

The Great Puritan Migration did not happen in 1643, but by then, they had 10,000 puritans living in Massachusetts. The settlement happened around the year of 1630. The land was great! It was easy to plant on and easy to work with!

Nov 19th-21st. 1620

  • The Mayflower lands in Cape Cod, and they explore the coast.
  • Pilgrim Fathers reach America in Provincetown Harbor, Mass.

They way to get into prison was if you were refusing to work for the Puritans, or if you didn't want to leave. They would feed you minimal in prison. It was nothing like jail is today. You had to survive basically. And you had to earn your food.

Quick Fact!

Tobacco Planters ask their leader for permission to attack the Indians. The Susquehannock Indians have been attacking the colonists for a long time and they wanted it to stop. The governor refused leading the colonists to burn down Jamestown and kill many Indians.

The colonists were very angry

with both the Governor and

the Indians. So they decided

to burn and kill what the

Governor and Indians loved.
