Viola as Cesario

  • After getting shipwrecked on a foreign land, Viola, realizing that her brother Sebastian has drowned, hears about Duke Orsino’s love for the lady Olivia and how she would not show her face for seven years, grieving for her brothers death.

  • Her initial intentions were to join Olivia's household, but after hearing this news, she decided to disguise herself as a young man named Cesario, so that she could join Orsino’s court.

  • She needed to be disguised because in this time ladies weren’t allowed to be freely walking as men do and disguising as a man gave her the freedom that every man had in that time.

Act 2, Scene 3

Maria writes a letter acting as if she were Olivia.

  • One night, while Sir Toby, Sir Andrew and Fool decided to hold a night party at Olivia’s household
  • Maria forged Olivia’s handwriting to write a letter to Malvolio (Olivia’s steward) saying that she was in love with him.
  • The reason behind her writing a letter to Malvolio is so she can get him to believe that Olivia loves him, but to make to everyone else believe he is a madman so he would go to prison.

Act 4, Scene 2

Feste as a parish priest

  •  Feste the fool is another character that appears to be in disguises.
  •  In act 4, scene 2, under directions from Sir Toby, the Fool disguises himself as a parish priest (curate) and visits the imprisoned Malvolio.
  •  He is described to be wearing a gown and beard to make Malvolio believe him to be Sir Topas the curate.
  •  Throughout their conversation, Malvolio constantly believes the fool.
  •  Later on the fool returns back to himself and agrees to get Malvolio pen, paper and candle to write to Olivia.
