STAR WARS: Return of the Jedi

  • In "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi," Luke takes the honorable course of action by going to face the emperor and Darth Vader without the intention to kill them out of revenge, benefiting the common good of the Rebels by defeating the leaders of the enemy army.
  • In addition, Luke is the only remaining person powerful enough to defeat Darth Vader. Obi Wan told Luke that he “cannot escape [his] destiny. [He] must face Darth Vader again.” He was told numerous times that his anger could be used in his advantage to fight against the dark side, but to be careful not to let it consume him. Luke succeeded in this aspect and saved his friends from the Empire.
  • Luke avoids submitting to unjust rules by resisting the temptation to "give in to the dark side of the force" and become another wretched, power seeking apprentice to be used as a tool for destruction to be manipulated by the emperor when he declared that “he was a jedi" and refused to kill his father.

Julius Caesar

Creon-Vader

Both have second thoughts about their unjust decision.

  • Creon initially wanted to punish Antigone for defying his authority and entombed her alive, but then changed his mind when he was swayed by the leader and Tiresias.

In Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, Brutus believes that assassinating Caesar is the only way of keeping him from 'scorning the base degress/By which he did ascend'(Act 2,Sc.1, L 26-27). He follows this honorable course in order to benefit the common good of Rome, and at Caesar's funeral he says 'not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more' (Act 3, Sc.1 L 9-10). In this way, Brutus is serving Rome by doing an honorable act, despite consequences that eventually lead to his death.

  • Darth Vader originally wanted the emperor to reign unchallenged by any jedi. However, after beginning to witness the electrocution of his son, Luke, he kills the emperor.

Brutus-Antigone-Luke

All have unshakable resolve to carry out a controversial decision they see as correct.

  • Brutus goes as far as to personally kill Caesar just to make sure that he would not become a tyrannical ruler like Pompey.
  • Antigone makes sure to secure a respectful burial for her brother, Polynices, even at the cost of her own life.
  • Leia, Luke's sister, tells him that facing his father alone would be unnecessary and risky, but Luke risks his life against two of the most powerful combatants in the opposing army to ensure the safety of his sister and help win the war for the rebels.

Theme:

Honor

Antigone

When Creon disallows Polynicies' burial, Antigone chooses to defy Creon's unscrupulous edict in order to honor her brother and please the gods. Her determination to bury her brother stems from her desire to honor the divine law of the gods along with her family. In Antigone's mind, the authority and rules of the gods outweigh Creon's, thus defying him through her actions, in turn, benefiting the common good.

Evidence

Antony-Emperor-Creon

Theme Statement: Undertaking the honorable course of action despite severe consequences benefits the common good more than yielding to unjust rules.

All use their authority to punish honorable acts, thus ruling unjustly.

  • " ... once the gods have rocked a house to its foundations the ruin will never cease, cresting on and on from one generation on throughout the race..." --Chorus p. 91, L 656-660
  • "Wisdom is by far the greatest part of joy, and reverence toward the gods must be safeguarded. --Chorus p. 128, L 1466-67
  • "These laws- I was not about to break them, not out of fear of some mans wounded pride, and face the retribution of the gods." --Antigone p.82, L509-511
  • The Emperor electrocuted Luke for refusing to turn over to the dark side.
  • Antony uses wit in his public speeches after the death of Caesar to make the people of Rome view Brutus as evil.
  • Creon punished Antigony for fulfilling her divine right to bury her brother.

Antigone-Luke-Brutus

Theme Triangles Project
