Quote from Romeo and Juliet

The significance of Petrarch and Laura is it tells a story about someone(Petrarch) who has the greatest "love" for someone else(Laura) who isn't really there. With Romeo, he was in "love" with Rosaline; yet she didn't have the same feeling.

Background information

Why Shakespeare Would use this Allusion

"MERCUTIO

Without his roe, like a dried herring. O flesh, flesh, how art thou fishified! Now is he for the numbers that Petrarch flowed in. Laura to his lady was but a kitchen-wench— marry, she had a better love to berhyme her—Dido a dowdy, Cleopatra a gypsy, Helen and Hero hildings and harlots, Thisbe a grey eye or so, but not to the purpose.— Signior Romeo, bonjour! There’s a French salutation to your French slop. You gave us the counterfeit fairly last night."

(Act I ; Scene IV)

Francesco Petrarch was an Italian writer who composed many love sonnets. Many of these sonnets were written from the inspiration of his love, Laura. Her actual presence is sort of a mystery; however his passion for her is clearly shown.

Shakespeare used this allusion to portray that Romeo's longing for Rosaline was repetitive; just like Petrarch's love for Laura was repeated in his own sonnets.
