Duties of a Prison administrator

prison administrators go far beyond just taking care of the ins & outs of Inmates. their jobs include

  • preparing work schedules
  • conducting staff training
  • review employee performance
  • guarantee medical care for the inmates
  • keep accurate records of inmates
  • maintain financial records, incident reports & injury reports

. Being a prison administrator is one of the most complex jobs out there, because it requires an understanding of administration, the correctional system, and institutional psychology. Prison administration are responsible for institutions in which thousands of inmates are housed, where public funds must be distributed, and where public funds must be properly distributed, and where personnel must be supervised at all times. In short, prison administrators oversee the intake, care and transfer of inmates, in addition to hiring and dismissing employees.

SMALLER INSTITUTIONS require prospective prison administrators to have

  • an associates degree in correctional administration paired with law enforcement.

LARGER INSTITUTIONS require prospective prison administrators to have

  • At least a bachelors degree
  • significant experience within the correctional field
  • a masters in public administration, or criminal justice
