Who was Frederick Jackson Turner?

Basically...

He believed that American identity was created in the struggle between the wild and civilization, which was a product of our movement west. This struggle created the American citizen as an individual who not only had the strength to tame the wild, and was also a bit wild themselves.

But...we're not moving west anymore!

This was seen by many people as an issue when the frontier closed. Theodore Roosevelt believed that this

problem could be solved by expanding overseas, into an empire. Turner philosophized that America could continue through the expansion of other frontiers - such as the frontier of technological innovation.

The idea that our Americaness came from the constant expansion west.

Frederick Jackson

Turner's

"Frontier Thesis"

This guy

A controversial historian

who came up with this

idea. It was first presented

at the Chicago World's Fair

There was also a major flaw in

this idea - it did not explain the

evolution or place that native

people had in the American

evolution.
