CaRbOn - 11

So far I håve not found any

environmental downsides, but sometimes the procedure can produce discomfort, claustrophobia, allergic reactions, and pregnancy side

effects.

The Half Life of Carbon 11, and

The Atomic Mass

Basic Information:

Name of Radioisotope:

Carbon - 11 is the name of the radioisotope

Type of Radioactive Decay:

Carbon 11 has a half life of 20.39 Minutes, and it has

the atomic mass of 11.

Carbon - 11 undergoes positron emission, or Beta + Decay.

Medical Procedures that use Carbon 11:

PET Imaging is the main medical procedure used with Carbon 11

Conditions that Carbon 11 is used to treat:

Pet imaging is used to find tumors and cancers, but PET imaging using carbon 11 is mainly used to find recurring prostate cancer in men

How Medical Procedure Works:

The person is first injected with a radioactive material in the are of concern, and as the material is broken down inside the body, positrons are produced. The scanner then proceeds to scan the body, and picks up the positive energy emitted by the positrons. Then a computer shows a 3d picture of the body part or area of concern. The image shows how body organs work, by learning how the organs break down the radioactive material.

Costs

The cost of a PET image:

The cost of a pet image is very expensive, but if you have insurance, you should be covered. The average price paid by an insurance company for a PET scan is $3,845.44

Alternative Treatment Cost:

The price for an alternative procedure, like an MRI scan, is about 1750, to 2200 dollars at a hospital, and at outpatient imaging centers, the price is about $700-1000. So both types of Procedures are pretty expensive.

Where Can I get a PET Scan, and how often should I go?

Where to go:

To get a PET image scan, you must go to a larger, more widely known hospital, or a specialized research center of some sort. This is the case because PET Scan and the scanner itself are very costly to you and the hospital

How Often Should I go?:

A PET Scan is not something that requires more than one outing to recieve your images. Once you go through the procedure, you only have to go once to get good image results. The amount of times you go depends on what your doctor says. If you have a reccuring cancer condition, you might need to go more than once to keep checking up on your body's progress with fighting the cancer.

Effects of Carbon 11

Equipment Needed:

Well obviously we are going to need a PET imaging machine, but they are super expensive, costing about $525,000-600,000. This one that I chose to list the price for is a Siemens and it is a nice 16 slice PET Scanner machine.
