The earliest period of Greek Art

480-323BCE

Civilization began in Mesopotamian civilization between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

Characterized by the uprising of Rome, a former Greek city state, this time period saw a move from the perfected ideals of the Greeks to a view of real people of the time period. Major architectural changes also came under way, especially with the invention of concrete.

Nonsecular rule of many separate, warring city states sparked warring gods who commanded absolute respect, something that the people of the time period were happy to provide.

These two periods had heavy influence on the growing realism that the Greeks were looking more and more into discovering. The Archaic period had the invention of the Archaic smile to give a degree of realism to the stautes, while the Classical period had the invention of Contrapposto.

Minoan and Mycenaean

2200-1000

This time period was around the early dynastic period of Egypt.

Very centric around themes of death and rebirth, most Ancient Egyptian art showed images of pharohs and their gods and above all else, the afterlife that they wanted to achieve.

This period of art came after the Roman empire, as the Byzantine empire was its successor. Came with a devolution of the traditonal art style, as well as a look towards Christianity that would prevail for the next several centuries.

Included the palace at Knossos to the metal Mask of Agammemnon. Many funeral items were made, as well as the first depictions of landscapes made just to show landscapes.
