Playing your part...

Critique of the Sick Role

Every role in society has a part to play in a Capitalist society:

A student is training to do a job that will, ultimately, make money

A business owner is making money

A manager is making sure that employees are doing their job right - to make money

  • Marxists believe that the Capitalist approach to society forces people on low income to keep working, regardless of how ill they are
  • Feminists say that the traditional roles of women (housework etc) still have to be done, whether you're ill or not
  • Interactionists suggest that our relationship with ill health depends on the people around us

Some jobs are there to keep other people going:

Service industries

Doctors

Nurses

Social Workers

Functionalists believe

Functionalism and

The Sick Role

You are, however, allowed to be sick!

PROVIDED THAT...

Everyone has a ROLE to play in society

Each role has a set of NORMS or expected behaviours

Society has a set of VALUES that each role has a consensus of opinion about

The purpose of society is to maintain a CAPITALIST economic structure

You actively seek medical help to get better quickly

You aim to re-start contributing to the economic success of society as quickly as possible

What if you're too poorly to work?

The Sick Role is based on the Bio-Medical Model of Health

Think about it...

Hospitals, surgeries and chemists help you to get physically better as quickly as possible

People with long term conditions such as learning disabilities, mental health issues, age-related illnesses, can't contribute to society and are therefore LESS VALUED in society

Functionalists believe that a Capitalist Society is dependent upon everyone contributing to the economic success of the society

Functionalists don't like people who don't contribute to society

  • When was the last time you had negative thoughts about someone who was having loads of time off work, causing additional work pressures to you?
  • When was the last time you had negative thoughts about someone who had loads of time off school or college, but you attend regularly, and yet they still get their grades?
  • What do you think of Benefits Street?

World Health Organisation's definition of Health:

Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
