Milankovich Cycle

General Information

  • Earth's orbit around the Sun
  • 3 parts to the cycle
  • All 3 cycles affect Earth's climatic weather

By: Julian Antunez

Milutin Milankovich

  • Did not discover cycles
  • Improved Methods

Precession (Wobble)

  • Occurs every 25,800yrs
  • Caused by the Sun and Moons tidal forces
  • 1/2 cycle N. Pole will point to the star Vega (47 degrees away from Polaris)
  • 2nd 1/2 cycle N. Pole will be back at Polaris

Eccentricity of Orbit

  • Shape of Orbit around the Sun
  • Ellipse - Path of the Earth
  • Earth's orbit = cyclical change
  • 1 cycle = 100,000yrs
  • More elliptical - Perhelion
  • Less elliptical - Aphelion

Axial Tilt (Obliquity)

  • 21.1 - 24.5 degrees
  • Tilt can change 3.4 degrees over 41,000 yrs
  • Tilt caused by Moon's orbital path
  • Reason why we have night and day
