Canadian contributions.This involved the ll Canadian Corps under the Canadian corps army.This corps included the second and third Canadian infantry division and also the fourth Canadian (armored) division. The first Canadian army was given the task of clearing the Sheldt. Each canadian division had different jobs. Some attacked Germany and some maintained a bridgehead.
clear the area north of Antwerp and secure access to South Beveland, second was to clear the Breskens pocket north of the Leopold Canal (a.k.a. Operation Switchback), third was that “Operation Vitality” was the capture of South Beveland, and finally to capture Walcheren Island (a.k.a. Operation Infatuate) which had been reinforced into a powerful German stronghold. Walcheren Island was considered to be the “strongest concentration of defences the Nazis had ever constructed” as part of the Atlantic Wall.
By the end of the five week offensive, there were 41,043 German
prisoners. Because of this, a stream of supplies were brought into the continent and began re-energizing the stalled Allied advance from Paris to Rhine. The allies had a deep water port which the Germans soon recognized and tried to destroy it or disrupt the flow of supplies.The port was so strategically vital that one of the German objectives was to retake the city and its port.
