Adams had two choices. One was for him to go to war with France where he could possibly take over Louisiana or maybe even Florida. The other was to make a treaty with France. He chose the second option of avoiding war.

The Americans wanted to fix the problems that they had with the British. Therefore, Washington sent John Jay to make a treaty with the English to figure out what they could do to fix any hard feelings that the British and Americans had. This was later know as Jay's Treaty. The French were not to happy about this.

To get back at the Americans, the French started attacking American merchant ships with their Navy and caught nearly 300 of their vessels. This was called impressing. This started a war that really did not exist. Soon enough the American Merchants started to revolt against the French and captured approximately 80 of their ships.

First the Quasi War ended. Second France had to return all stolen ships along while America payed France $20 million dollars for their their shipping in the past. This also killed the alliance that America and France had, but still remained each other's main trading partners.

By following Washington's Farewell Address, Adams was able to make a treaty and stay away from war. Adams sent the diplomats that were involved in the XYZ Affair, Elbridge Gerry, John Marshall, and Charles Pickney. They were deployed to reach agreements with Napoleon so France and America could work together again.
