Solar Powered Hot Dog Cooker

How long will it take for a hot dog to cook using only the sun?

Procedure

Background

like comment share

The metal of the Pringles can will help direct the sunlight into the hot dog. Ways you can tell the hotdog is cooked is by if it is over 85°F and is plump and soft.

The first step was to make the cooker. First, a Pringles can was cut down the middle, and two flaps were made on each side. Then, a hole was poked with the wire through the center of the lid and through the center of the base. Plastic wrap was then taped in place over the gap that the flaps had made. A hot dog was stuck onto the wire lengthwise and put into the cooker. The lid was put back on and the entire thing was placed in the sun. Every 5 minutes the temperature was recorded with a thermometer.

Hypothesis

If the hotdog is placed in the cooker for 20 minutes, than it will be over 82° and be fully cooked.

Analysis

In the lab, a hotdog was tested to see how long it would take to cook using the power of the sun. A cooker was made from a Pringles can, a wire, tape, and plastic wrap, and set outside in the sun. Every 5 minutes, the temperature of the hot dog was recorded until It was fully cooked.

The hypothesis was that if the hot dog was placed in the cooker for 20 minutes, it would be fully cooked. However, the hypothesis was incorrect, it only took 15 minutes for the hotdog to cook. There is some uncertainty in the data. It could have taken a lot less than 15 minutes for the hot dog to cook, especially because it was right on the edge at 10 minutes. Also, the thermometer could have been read wrong, becuase they have very small dials. This experiment brings up the question of how long it could take to cook other foods.

This information would be useful when camping, so that the campers can know how long to cook food without using a fire.
