Moral Ambiguity

The Monster with the Delacey's

The Monster and Victor

Definition

We can see throughout the novel that Frankenstein's monster fights his own moral battle. While the monster wishes for vengeance against Victor, and society in general, for the injustices done to him since his "birth", he is also an essentially gentle creature who does not commit acts of violence without cause.

"I persuaded myself that when they should become acquainted with my admiration of their virtues, they would compassionate me, and overlook my personal deformity." - The Monster

Moral Ambiguity - a complex situation that often involves an apparent mental conflict between moral imperatives

-The creature kills Victor's brother and frames Justine

-The creature swears revenge on Victor, and kills Elizabeth on the night she marries

Victor

-Despite the his vendetta against his creator, the creature mourns over Victor's

death

  • Safie really wanted to marry Felix
  • Safie was debating joining the Delacey's
  • The Monster contemplated revealing himself

"Was there no injustice in this? Am I to be thought the only criminal,

when all human kind sinned against me?"

— the Monster

Lyrics

The Truth Revealed

Since I was young I've been very hard to

please

And I don't know wrong from right

But there is one thing I could never

understand

Some of the sick things that a girl does to a

man, so

(Chorus)

I'm just sittin' on a fence

You can say I got no sense

Trying to make up my mind

Really is too hard a bind

So I'm sittin on a fence

All of my friends at school grew up and

settled down

And they mortgaged up their lives

One things not said too much, but I think

it's true

They just get married cause there's nothing

else to do, so

(Chorus x2)

The day can come when you get old and

sick and tired of life

You just never realize

Maybe the choice you made wasn't really

right

But you go out and you don't come back

at night, so

(Chorus x2)

Making the Female Monster

Victor fights an internal conflict of moral ambiguity. Who does he tell of his creation? When is the truth to be revealed? What will it cost him to share his secret?

-Justine blamed for murder, only Victor knew the truth

-torn between:

*reveal his part in the murder, accepting the consequences

*keep quiet, condemn an innocent to death, secure his own safety

*Decision is ultimately made out of fear

Frankenstein's monster asks Victor to make a female creature so that he doesn't have to be lonely anymore. Victor is torn between whether to make the female monster or not.

"I was moved. I shuddered when I thought of the possible consequences of my consent; but I felt that there was some justice in his argument."

-Victor Frankenstein

I feel so conflicted...

-Finally reveals his experiment to Magistrate

* Took the death of his entire family

*Guilt overcame fear of reaction/consequence

For Your Consideration:

1.) What was preventing Victor from revealing the truth about his creation?

2.) Why is Victor torn between whether or not to make a female monster?

3.) What was Mary Shelley's reasoning for focusing on moral ambiguity in the novel?
