The main products that the cottage industry produced were cloth, and clothing. There were many weavers which produced the cloth, eventually turning it into clothing. Other home made products included shoes, cigars, and hand decorated items.

The advantages of the cottage industry were that the woman could stay at home and look after their family. The extra income earned also benefited the family, as woman generally weren't bread winners in families. The cottagers could now work in smaller communities with the support of friends and families.

The disadvantages of the cottage industry was that cottagers would work very hard for very little pay, and they worked alone if their family wasn't at home with them. They would not have the support of other workers. Clothiers lowered prices because they could find work cheaper elsewhere.

Today, there are still many cottage industry set ups in peoples homes. People who create specialized goods (e.g pottery, fused glass etc;) and sell them out of their homes are examples of cottage industry set ups.

Today, many people work from home. Economists believe that the cottage industry is back. They believe this due to the fact that many people work out of their homes, as well as many people use their computer in their home to work from home. Technically, if you create a document and send it into your employer, it mimics the effect of creating products and distributing them from your home.

Who were the typical cottagers?

The typical person who would have a cottage industry home would be rural families (woman), as well as farm wives. All spinning and weaving would be done by cottagers. Farming wives would weave in their free time to make a profit which was desperately needed by farmers. There is only one weaver in each village, usually woman.

The Cottage Industry In America

How It Was Done

Basic Principles

The cottage industry wasn't a very complex system. Once the cottagers made their products, they were taken by the merchants and sold. Many times the cottagers were paid a fixed rate for their goods, but sometimes they were paid a percentage of the profits.

In America, it began being used in 1870. The cottagers were usually immigrants, and many of them lived and worked together in small run down apartments, called tenements. The cottage industry was a form of slavery in America. This led to the tenement act, which disabled tenements from being allowed without regulations.

The Cottage Industry is a system of manufacturing select goods from home. It was mainly used in the 1700-1800s, but the better organization of factories led to a decline in the Cottage industry. Even though people still have cottage industry set ups in their homes, it is not as common as it used to be.

The Decline In The Cottage Industry

The Cottage Industry Today

As I said before, the cottage industry's popularity died with the better organization of factories. Why would anyone want to wait longer and pay more for cloth that could be made quicker and cheaper in factories? The answer is hardly anyone. Former cottagers either would now work in a factory, or they would stop working all together.
