8th Principle: Economic Justice

The economy of a country and of the world must serve all people.

All workers have the right to productive work, to a safe working environment, to a fair wage, and to form unions.

In Today's Society, for example :

For example : In today’s society, there is still plenty of racism and religious discrimination going around. We must work together to eliminate that by taking steps, one at a time, and

The right of all persons to the basic necessities of life take priority over all other rights and limit the right to property and profit.

doing things such as including people of all races and religions into your conversations, sticking up for those who are racially attacked in the community, not limiting your help to anybody, etc.

In Today's Society, for example :

If you were to become the CEO or your own small company, you should never neglect to examine the wages of your workers and the amount of work they do each day. Their wages should amount to the labor they do. Everybody deserves economic justice.

9th Principle : Equality of All

When God created humans, he expected us to be stewards of the earth. To live according to this principle, it isn't as hard as we think. We can complete practically effortless tasks such as planting trees, picking up garbage (our own and others we see), reduce the amount of paper towels to dry our hands, and the list goes on. However, these tasks can become unbearably difficult if we continue to ignore them.

The inherent dignity of all persons demands the equality of all persons.

6th Principle : Stewardship of God’s Creation

The mosaic of human life is God’s gift of diversity and not a justification for prejudice and discrimination.

As the creator of the earth, all that is good in this world is a gift from God.

7th Principle : Subsidiarity

By God, we are called to be good and wise stewards of these gifts.

Social organization and governments exist for the good of the individual.

By treating the environment and all forms of life with respect, in a way that sustains their quality and existence for future generations, we fulfill God’s wishes, our responsibilities.

The mosaic is made up of many cultures, nationalities and religions.

The assumption of the task or problem is given to those closest to the problem or who are first in line.

Subsidiarity is a principle of social organization that expresses that all social bodies exist for the sake of the individual - Societies have no right to take over what individuals are able to do, larger societies must not overpower the smaller ones.

Subsidiarity is the idea that problems should be solved at the smallest and most intimate level possible.

In Today's Society, for example :

The federal government shouldn’t be solving problems provinces can solve, provinces shouldn’t be solving problems that communities can solve, and so on. These problems should be solved at the most intimate level possible.

5th Principle : Solidarity

Every human being belongs to the one family of God. As we acknowledge human dignity, we are become our sisters’ and brothers’ keepers.

To be in solidarity in a global and interdependent world means to respect and promote personal, social, economic, and political rights throughout the world and for all people.

In Today's Society, for example :

If the manufacturers from 3rd world countries received income equivalent to the material they have fabricated, they wouldn’t be so financially unstable as they currently are. Unbeknownst to them, certain companies are taking advantage of their services and lack of awareness. This principle is telling as that we must eliminate these occurrences so we could grow together in solidarity. We must protect our brothers and sisters.

4th Principle : Preferential Option for the Poor

In Today's Society, for example :

The homeless and the hungry can be found roaming all over the streets of downtown, students encounter them everyday on the travel to and from school. This shows us to what extent the moral conscience of our society goes. Many of us have the thinking of "helping one can't help everyone." However, this is definitely something that should be changed. If each of us gave a few spare coins, bought a small meal, gave our leftovers,

volunteered at the homeless shelter or donated old clothing, we would unknowingly help someone more than we could ever expect.

Principles of Catholic Social Teaching

The basic test of a moral society lies in how it treats its most vulnerable members. The poor are the most urgent moral claim on the conscience of the nation.

The Catholic Church believes that Christ’s presence in today’s world is made known when we reach out in love to those in need: the poor and the sick, those who hunger and thirst for nourishment and for justice, the homeless and the elderly, those who are imprisoned by abuse, drugs, alcohol, or depression.

Through the Last Judgment, nations are instructed to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first: widows, the unborn, persons with disabilities, the ill, the homeless and the elderly.

3rd Principle : Rights and Responsibilities

- Catrina G.

Human dignity can be protected and a healthy community can be achieved only if human rights are protected and responsibilities are met.

1st Principle : Human Dignity

Every person has a right to things necessary for human decency and to live a full and decent life. We have fundamental rights such as:

The foundation of all Catholic social teaching is the belief that all human beings are essentially worthy of respect and honor.

In accordance to a right to life, our society must make possible:

However, corresponding to these rights are duties and responsibilities to one another, to our families, and to the larger society. These responsibilities include:

From conception to the moment of natural death, each person’s right to life is consistent to their inherent dignity.

fundamental right to life, to freedom, to the necessities of life.

As well as the right to education, to employment, to health care and to ownership of property.

to help sustain and promote the rights of others, to participate in forming and maintaining a just society, to participate in work, to respect and promote the rights and freedoms of others

freedom of speech, freedom of religion, humane working conditions, the ability to raise and provide for a family, affordable and decent housing, and health care

Stemming from the idea that all persons are created by God in His image and likeness, everybody is sacred and valuable.

A moral vision of society begins with human dignity.

In Today’s Society, for example :

In Today's Society, for example :

As human dignity means respecting all people as God’s people, in our society today, we must treat everyone the way we would like to be treated. There is nobody that is not worthy of all the respect they could obtain.

As a community, we must re-welcome those who have lost their way and help them reintegrate into the society. Those who have done things that would take time to be forgiven or those who need extra help due to some sort of deficiency in their brains, we must treat them with respect for they are human, too. Those who are mentally disables, criminals, sinners, everybody deserves all the respect in the world.

For example, with the freedom to raise and provide for a family, it is the person’s responsibility to take care of their family until they are of age to take care of themselves. With a community following through with these responsibilities, people will treat each other with dignity and admiratio. The community will grow together healthily with respect.

2nd Principle : Common Good and Community

In Today's Society, for example :

A human being is not only sacred but also social.

As social beings in our diverse, large society, we must participate in politics for the sake of our voices, a part of the common good, to be heard. We don’t necessarily have to become a candidate in a political party but participating in politics includes something as simple as taking a vote. In order to support the individual who we believe could be the best representative of our area, who would do the best for the common good, it is also a great idea to volunteer in the candidate’s events around our communities (ie: meet and greets, stampede breakfasts).

Firstly, the common good is the social condition that promotes the dignity of persons, allowing them to reach their full potential and receive the rights and privileges necessary for a happy life.

In a wide society, we must support and strengthen dignity and rights in relationships for they are the central social institutions.

Economics, politics, law, and policies in our societies directly affect human dignity, the capacity of individuals to grow in community and the protection of human rights.

People have a right and a duty to participate in society (in the economic, political, and cultural life), seeking together the common good and well-being of all, especially the poor and vulnerable.
