A typical work day: First you would do your normal morning routine and when you get to the office that's when the actual work begins. The most part of a family doctor's typical day routine is meeting with patients for scheduled visits. A family doctor's office often opens at 8:00 a.m. or 9:00 a.m., with appointments starting at that point. During appointments, you may have regular wellness visits, patients presenting with mental or physical symptoms, and follow-up treatment visits. Another big part of a Doctors life is communicating with their patients, because communicating with the patients allows them to know how they are doing and what is up with their life. Doctors get many calls through out the day and most of the time the receptionist is the one who answers the phone calls. The calls mostly consist of a patient wanting a refill on a prescription, or seeking basic medical advice to a pharmacy, and following up on a prescription or refill. Typically, a receptionist takes a message until the doctor is available or gives the phone to a nurse or physician's assistant. Another between-appointment task for a family doctor is reviewing tests or images. After they have come back from the clinic that they had sent to so that they can make the report. Some patients come in for basic lab work or for specific tests related to illnesses. After a review of lab results, the doctor or nurse often calls the patient with information. While the official day at a family practice often runs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., a doctor's day often kicks-off when the alarm sounds around 6:00 in the morning. Often, doctors spend an hour or two after close reviewing the day's patients and updating records. Some family doctors also spend time on-call at local hospitals after hours.

1. Job prospects for this occupation are good. (Update: April 2015) The number of General Practitioners and Family Physicians has increased significantly over the last few years. Because of the growth in the health care needs and because the labor pool is too small, their number should rise significantly over the next few years.

Working Conditions

Simon Fraser University

The one thing that surprises me abut being a Family Physician is all of the administrative work that you have to do. Administrative work can take up a large part of their day. Those who run their own practices have many business-related responsibilities. Family physicians can also get involved in teaching and research, or become involved in the community to promote healthy lifestyles. This really surprises me because I always thought that family physicians were only supposed to diagnose and teat people. Also I never knew that family physicians also had the responsibility of doing so much paperwork for administrative.

Education, Training, and

Qualification

1. The first thing that I don't like about this job is all the paperwork that comes with this job.

2. The constant squabbling with the administration and the ministry of health in attempting to advocate the needs of your patients.

3. Telling your patients that they have some type of disease or illness.

4. Having a patient come in, in crisis, and not have an immediate resolution—it’s quite hard.

5. Dealing with the Lawsuits because it can take really long and be stressful.

Required education:

Bachelors degree(4 years),(optional Masters degree and PHD), Medical degree (4 years) and Family medicine internship & residency (2-3 years). Once this training is complete, you’ll need to meet certification and licensing requirements. This usually involves passing exams set by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). Some qualifications are you should be an energetic, patient, compassionate person who enjoys helping people of all ages and backgrounds. You must also be hard-working, and willing to keep up-to-date with rapid changes in the field of health.

My Opinion

1.The first thing I like about being a Family Physician is that you get to be in a relaxed and calm are, and that it isn't always loud in there.

2. I like that you don't really feel rushed at any point of the visit and you can take your time to listen to the patient.

3. I really like the fact that you set your own hours if you are self employed.

4. I really the ability to help people and doing that on this job is the perfect chance.

5. I really like the atmosphere and calmness of doing your job and also doing it right.
