Aim: How to use a thesis statement to help develop a strong essay outline?

Quick Review:

Thesis statement for the 2013 DBQ question

What are the elements of a strong thesis statement?

According to the documents, the regional issues faced by the Europeans, such as growing population, need for more resources, and territorial challenges are the primary reasons for their struggles for global power in the mid 18th century.

As made evident by the enclosed documents, many societies across the world fought to gain political and economic rights through the rise of nationalist movements. In the case of women's rights, however, said nationalist movements served as both opportunities and barriers due to religious and previously established social structures.

OUTLINE BASED ON THESIS:

Since Thesis statement makes a claim, the primary goal of the essay paragraphs is the evidence

  • Paragraph 1 - Discuss the regional issues faced by the Europeans
  • Paragraph 2 - Show examples of how the struggles for power served to alleviate regional issues discussed in paragraph 1
  • Paragraph 3 - Use paragraph 1 and 2 to reiterate your claim

Conclusion

Practice makes perfect
