Muhammad had asked his close companion Abu Bekir for his daughter Aisha's hand in marriage at the age of 6. They were married at 6 but she moved in with him and consummated the marriage at 9, when she hit puberty.

Besides her obvious beauty, there were many important factors as to why Muhammad chose Aisha to be his wife, despite her age.

  • A'isha accompanied Muhammad on a campaign and was travelling with a caravan
  • She was seperated when she went back to find a necklace that she'd dropped in the desert. The caravan left without realizing she was gone.

  • A companion of Muhammad's, Safwan bin Muattal, found A'isha by chance in the desert
  • Safwan led A'isha on his camal back to the caravan, which rose a suspicion of Adultery against them
  • Aisha transmitted 2,210 hadiths
  • Her interpretations of the Quran were of personal experiences and learning with the prophet.
  • Scholars would come to her for advice and insights of hadiths and general questions reguarding Islam.
  • Her excellent memory allowed her to memorize verses.

Aisha's widowed life

Aisha as a role model

Battle of Camel

  • Aisha played a pivotal role as a teacher, exponent and interpreter of the religion of Islam. Aisha was an exceptionally intelligent and astute woman, a young prodigy, and this was the main reason why she was married to the Holy Prophet. An intellectually gifted person was required who would have daily contact with the Holy Prophet at the closest and most personal level, so as to absorb the teachings that he was giving on all aspects of life by his words and actions. Such a person would need to possess the following qualities:
  • an excellent, precise memory to retain a vast amount of detail accurately,
  • the understanding to grasp the significance and the principles of the teachings
  • powers of reasoning, criticism and deduction to resolve problems on the basis of those teachings,
  • the skills to convey knowledge to a wide range of audience,
  • have the prospect of living for a considerable period of time after the death of the Holy Prophet in order to spread his message to distant generations.
  • Known as "first fitna" or "muslim civil war"
  • Aisha was angered by the killing of Uthman
  • also angered of Ali being named the 4th Caliph
  • Name of battle refers to the camel Aisha rode on
  • After the battle- suni's and shia's perception of Aisha completley split

Muhammad visits A'isha at home

  • Muhammad goes to Aisha's home
  • He sat next to A'isha for the first time since the slander began
  • “Aisha, I have heard this about you. If you are innocent, I expect that Allah will declare your innocence. But if you have committed the sin, you should offer repentance, and ask for Allah’s forgiveness; when a servant (of Allah) confesses his guilt and repents, Allah forgives him.”

  • Aisha turned to her father hoping that he would say something in her defence, but all he could say was that he didn't know what to say
  • Later, Allah sends proof her innocence to Muhammad
  • Then he recited the following ten verses of Sura An-Noor that had her vindication
  • S
  • Aisha became a great scholar
  • Pushed for edcuation and social reform
  • Had a public role in politics
  • Promoted education for women
  • Had many students that became great scholars
  • Was skilled in medicine, poetry, maths and speaking.
  • Her involvement in the Battle of the Camel left a lasting impression on women and political role.
  • Muhammad died in Aisha's apartment
  • She was widowed at 18
  • could not remarry, could not have children
  • Importan to remember: Aisha was a multifaceted and skilled woman outside of taking care of Muhammad
  • Fought in the Battle of Camel
  • Abd-Allah ibn Ubayy, who in his time was labeled a Munafiq (hypocrite), fabricated and spread a rumor about Safwan and A'isha
  • Her accusers, under Surah 24, were later subject to 80 lashes for accusing a chast woman

  • Aisha fell ill before the rumor spread to her
  • She noticed Muhammad's attitude toward her had changed
  • A'isha eventually found out from another woman
  • She returned home to her parents for a brief period

Aisha possessed all these qualities and carried out this mission is an absolutely positive and undeniable, historical fact. After the Holy Prophet’s death, she acted as a teacher and interpreter of Islam, providing guidance to even the greatest of the male Companions of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. They made a special point of going to her to gain knowledge and seek her opinion. A vast number of sayings and actions of the Holy Prophet are reported from her in books of Hadith. She not only quoted his sayings and reported her observations of events, but interpreted them to provide solutions to questions. Whenever necessary, she corrected the views of the greatest of the Companions of the Holy Prophet. She made rulings and judgments on which Islamic law is based.

Abu Musa said: Whenever there was any hadith that was difficult [to understand] for us, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, and we asked Aisha we always found that she had knowledge about that hadith.”

“Musa ibn Talha said: I never saw anyone more eloquent than Aisha”
