How It Started

  • In return, the scientists that Ellis taught referred him to computer science programs
  • Ellis attended college at Beloit College where he was the only African-American student, he was able to go to college because his church helped him raise the money
  • Beloit was 100 miles from Chicago
  • He overcame all of these obstacles to become one of the greatest computer scientists of his age and a pioneer to all computer scientists

  • Read computer manuals since he wasn't allowed to use a computer
  • At the age of 15 he knew more than most scientists
  • Taught computer scientists how to reuse old key cards in computers

Obstacles

  • Had to overcome racism and segregation
  • Wasn't allowed to use a computer because of his race
  • Had to avoid gangs and violence growing up
  • Experienced depression because he had to be excluded from many things to avoid the violence

Clarence A. "Skip" Ellis

1943-2014

  • Born in Chicago
  • Lived in a very poor neighborhood
  • Mother struggled to raise five children
