In the third chapter, they were on their way to St Paul. They boarded a train where they were greeted with women, treats, and much more. The train was very nice, it had plush seats, and the food was amazing. They stopped in Maryland, where there were hundreds of black people greeting them. They eventually started getting to the smaller poorer parts of town. And they had this thought that the war will be less of a war for them, because the south had nothing.

Charley and the rest of the troops were told where to line up and where to shoot. The first shot went off. All of a sudden you could hear bullets sinking into peoples bodies. You could hear screams of those who just got shot, and others just fell to the ground. Some were torn apart. Charley made it past that round unharmed.

In chapter 9 it's the last battle of the book. The battle of Gettysburg. Charley said this was the worst war possible he had undergone. Killed men and horses everywhere. You could see men marching then they'd all fall. Two men were fighting and Charley tried to intrude but was hit. He thought that he was dead.

They now were going to march to Richmond to fight in the next battle. There they set everything down besides their canteens and weapons. The artillery came first from the other side. They came with canons and smoke. By the hundreds Charley saw horses and men fall down to their death. Charley had blood on himself and was then told that he was hit in the shoulder and walked to the hospital tents. There he waited for a week to get checked on. They checked him and he had not even a single scratch. So he was told to stay and help with the others who were wounded.

The rest of chapter 5 consists of the troops getting ready for battle, loading their guns, getting canteens filled, cleaning themselves up. He felt as though he was doing everything wrong, and id he did it right it was by mistake. As day arrived he could see units forming, getting ready for battle. His group was now marching into formation preparing themselves for what is to come.

They boarded a train to the south. There they farmed, waiting for the Rebs. They attacked and many men were killed. Not only the men but the Sergeant of Charley's troop. He was shot in the stomach and killed himself. The second battle would be next.

Second Battle was now in action. Before this battle had begun Charley was still working in the town life. He was helping in the hospital wing with the men who were injured or dying. He would feed them. For food they were running low on pork and beef, so they had to kill the horses and feed the patients horse parts.

In chapter 4, Charley arrives in Gettysburg, PA. That is where the war takes place.

Charley and the rest of the troops, were brought out. They lined up perfectly and stood there until the first gun shot.

Chapter 5 is at nighttime. At the beginning they moved to safety to try and find food and get some rest. They went uphill and laid next to a tree. From there he could lookout and see the battle field, there was many dead bodies. Charley was told where a stream of water was so he could fill up his canteen. There the sun was rising. The more and more the sun arose the pinker the water became. He then saw a bunch of blood and dead bodies. To the middle of the chapter he was unable to hold and food down or water, and if he could he still felt sick.

In the final chapter the war is over and the union won. This was several years after. Charley moved like an old man. He was too exposed to the world at such a young age. At this time Charley was 21 and studying about women and families. He went out one day and with him he brought a picnic. He had coffee, and many types of food he ate during the war. There he thought about everything, the deaths, and the people. It was all over.

In chapter 7 the troops take off 3 months of fighting. They stayed at camp. The waiting went from summer to fall, in the winter they don't fight. Disease was spreading through the camp, so most men were sick, and if they weren't sick, they were on the verge of being sick. During the day they were digging holes and farming, to keep the time passing by.

In the rest of chapter 7 Charley talks about the food. It was simple and bad. It tasted like wood. Later in the chapter Charley ran into a southern soldier who wanted to trade tobacco for some coffee beans. Since he was on the other side they had to trade in secret, so they did that. At night they traded, and had a conversation, soon after Charley was jumped by a guard saying how bad it was to be talking to the enemy. The truce between them was over.

In the second chapter. Charley is moved to Fort Snelling. That is where he was trained and learned how to fight. He used weapons and tried to hit targets. Throughout his training, Charley got letters from his mother, asking him how he was doing, and what not. She really wanted him home. Charley almost left, when they were called into formation. They were to march to a river where they would be taken to st. Paul. On their march they were treated like royalty.

In chapter 6 the first battle had just finished it was called the Battle for Manassas Junction and Bull run. They moved to Washington and set up camp there, where they did drills and stood on watch. Charley was payed $33 to spend on whatever he liked. He kept $4 of it for himself and bought pies, and he sent the rest home to his family.
