INACCURATE

ACCURATE

  • Paul and his family were transported away from Rwanda by the Rwandan Patriotic Front, not the UN
  • They were also not taken to a camp, but to a wasteland
  • Paul's nieces were not as healthy and cared after as portrayed in the movie
  • Paul was described as extorting the refugees for money and removing them if they could not pay, along with trying hard to remove the UN from Rwanda and being very loyal to the Pro-Hutu movement
  • Paul Rusesabagina was a real manager with a Tutsi wife who bribed local military figures to keep refugees safe
  • The UN in Rwanda were not permitted to use force
  • General Bizimungu was a real Rwandan soldier tried and prosecuted for war crimes
  • Colonel Oliver was based off of General Roméo Dallaire

There had been years of tension between the two major ethnic groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis, and multiple accounts of displacement of power. After Hutu president called a ceasefire, his plane was shot down which initated Hutu militia forces to commence with a mass-murdering of the Tutsi people.

  • Talking about cooking with casava
  • Hutus wear special patterns
  • Europeans value Tutsis more because their features resemble their own
  • Colonel Oliver talks about racism interfereing with European aid
  • Pro-Hutu radio station
  • Hutus refer to Tutsi's as cockaroaches
  • President of Sabena explains lack of European intervention

TO SUMMARIZE

HISTORICAL MOVIE

I believe this is meant to be a historical film, but enhanced for an American audience. I feel this way because of the shocking events like the massive killings, Hutu extremist radio, the assassination of Rwandan president, presence of the Interhamwe, UN, Red Cross, and Tutsi Rebel Group.
