Was it predictable or completely unexpected?

Nearly all of the victims of the Boxing Day Tsunami were taken completely by surprise despite the fact that the earthquake preceded the tsunami by a few hours. There were no warning systems in the Indian Ocean to detect tsunamis and warn the general poulation.Scientists could have possibly given more warning about this wave if they had joined up the dots with these events:

  • The 2002 Sumatra earthquake it was believed to be a foreshock.
  • The Boiling Lake in Dominica was reported to have suddenly dropped in water level two days before the tsunami took place.

What is a Tsunami?

What is a Tsunami exactly?

The English dictionary defines tsunami as a long, high sea wave caused by an earthquake or other disturbance.

Story of a survivor

Maria

Good Morning today I will be talking about the 2004 tsunami that formed in the Indian Ocean. It happened at 12:58am on Sunday 26 December.

How does a tsunami occur?

Usually a tsunami occurs with an underwater earthquake. The earthquake happens when the plates underneath the Earth's surface shift. From deep in the ocean the energy of the earthquake causes the water to rise above sea level. Gravity causes the water to form a wave that travels at incredible speed with amazing force. The tsunami gets bigger as it reaches the shore because of the sand rising.

Not many people survived this terrible natural disaster but here is one of the people who did.

This tsunami was formed when the Indian Plate clashed with the Burma Plate.

Maria Belon's Story

On December 26, 2004 Maria Belon was reading a book lying by the poolside as her three sons Lucas, Tomas and Simon played in the pool with her husband. In minutes her life was changed forever."Suddenly we heard a horrible sound, like the sound of a thousand big planes. Seconds later there was a black wall in front of us. I thought it was death." she said. Moments after the tsunami sucked her and her family up. When the tsunami finally spit her out she remembered thinking "I am alive but I am alone." But as she clung to the palm tree she saw her 10 year old son Lucas floating in the water and started crying with joy that her son was alive. She eventually found her husband and two sons-they all miraculously survived.
