Advertisements

Advertising as it is known today finds its roots in the industrial expansion of the 1880s. The mass production and the lowering of prices on consumer goods meant that more items were available to more people than ever before. The construction of the transcontinental railroads provided a national market for a company's goods.

By developing repeat customers, advertising also helped build brand loyalty for the company. Brand loyalty helps sell other existing and new products to these same customers.

Radios

The use of radios in the 1920s brought information to the attention of Americans far more quickly than previous methods. In result, the radios united families members from all over the country. Family members gathered around the early radios for nightly news. Americans tuning into radio stations could hear the latest updates on many issues, including spreading news of pilot Charles Lindbergh's first trans-Atlantic flight from the United States to France in the late 1920s. This invention brought this nation together as a whole.

The 1920's has become known as "the golden age of sports". During this time workers had more leasure time, and newer/ bigger stadiums were being built. Newspapers were increasing their coverage of sports. Also at this time roads were being built allowing for fans to drive longer distances to view sporting events. During the 20's was the first time in America when people payed money to watch others play sports.

The Radio became a product of the mass market in the 20s.  Manufacturers were overwhelmed by the demand for them, as customers stood in line for radios after dealers had sold out. By 1922, 600 radios stations had sprung up all over the United States. Between 1923 and 1930, 60 percent of American families purchased radios.  Families gathered around their radios for night-time entertainment.  As radio ownership increased, so did the number of radio stations.
