"The first Marist school opened in LaValla, France in 1818 and is still in operation today. Marist schools began to multiply at the rate of almost a dozen a year. Marcellin's mission quickly spread to other countries, coming to the United States in 1885-86. By the turn of the 20th century, the Marist Brothers had accepted invitations from many countries around the world."
Marcellin Champagnat was born on May 20, 1789 in Rozet, near St. Etienne, France. He was the founder of the Marist Brothers and very dedicated to children's education.
The Marist Brothers were founded in 1817 by Marcellin Champagnat. Marcellin and his first two recruits observed and fought against the spiritual and educational devastation the war had caused of children.
His aunt, Louise Champagnat was Jean-Baptiste's sister and a religious Sister of Saint Joseph. He went to school for only a short time. He failed to demonstrate a want to learn. He did not like the way that the teachers taught brutally. By age eleven, he had decided that he preferred farm work to the world of books.
He was ordained as a priest in 1816, and he was a part of a group led by Jean-Claude Colin which founded the society of Mary. He was the ninth of ten children of Jean-Baptiste and Marie Therese Chirat Champagnat.
Today, there are more than 3,400 Marist Brothers worldwide, and 165 are in the United States. Everyday the Marist Brothers continue to help children grow mentally and educationally.
