1. “In Mrs. Swinton’s garden, it was always summer.”
The story shows us how isolated people are in an overpopulated city. It is the story of a lonely mother that can't love her child so she spends her time in her garden. The little robot boy, David, doesn't know why his mother doesn’t love him and he wonders if he's real.
“Supertoys last all summer long” is a story of loneliness.
The opening passage shows how people live their lifes in a holographic reality.
All the characters in the story feel loneliness. Harry Swinton is developing synthetic life forms and at the same time talks about the isolation in the world. Monica Swinton want to have a real child but cannot love David. David is a little robot boy who loves his “mommy” but feels rejected. So he wonders if he’s truly real. The narrator shows us loneliness on many ways. He shows us how in a future world people don't feel connection so they buy synthetic life forms. He shows us how a mother feel, that can't have children and how she spends her time in a garden. He shows us loneliness through the eyes of a little synthetic boy. These examples make "Supertoys last all summer long" a true story of loneliness.
