  • The Potters live in areas of Uganda, Eastern DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda.
  • Some researches indicate that they are between 30000 and 35000 in Rwanda.
  • Because of deforestation, they were pushed from their ancestral land (forests) for cattle and cultivation purposes.
  • After losing this land without indemnity and their consent, they adopted the pottery, the only source of their income.

Short History of the Potters Community

  • Indigenous people of Rwanda, also known as the potters or the “Batwa.”
  • Pygmies indigenous people were the first to inhabit the equatorial forests.
  • They used to be called “people of the forest”.
  • This community constitutes a political, social and ethnic minority in whole central African region.
