Pre-1990
-Somalia was formed in 1960 from a British protectorate and an Italian colony.
-In 1969 President Barre took over in a military coup
-In 1970 Somalia declared itself a socialist nation
-Fought a war against Ethiopia from 1977-1978 and this ended their alliance with the USSR.

The first formal Government in over Twenty years was put into place. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected in as the first presidential election since 1967
March-May: A large amount of civilians are injured in Mogadishu due to fighting amongst military groups.

The U.S. sent military troops with supplies to try and assist the people of Somalia. In 1993 two U.S. helicopter were shot down by Somalian military groups. This led to the U.S putting end to all missions to Somalia in 1994.

August: UN assist Somalia with food for the south during a drought.
The Somalian Government finally returns from Kenya but there are disagreements on where they should locate the government.
Islamic extremists are pushed out of Somalia with assistance from Kenya and the U.S. in their first military interaction with Somalia since 1993
Shortly after the downfall of the president the North-Western part of Somalia declared itself independent and named itself, the Republic of Somaliland.
