Purpose

A divergent thinking tool that helps generate innovative options

This tool is used when:

  • Novel, innovative or unusual options are desired
  • The group is starting to slow down and needs to be energized
  • The flow of ideas/options needs to be moved in a new direction

Description

Forced Connections

Connecting the Unconnected

A thinking tool used during idea creation that forces a relationship between the task and an unrelated object

The idea is to compare the problem with something else that has little or nothing in common (object, picture, music) to gain new insights in order to create more ideas

Metaphorical-analogical thinking opens up new pathways of creative thinking and allows for new perspectives

Principles of Creative Problem Solving

How do we better support our ELLs with new vocabulary?

Tips to Encourage Effective Use

Steps for Forced Connections

  • Use random objects - do not limit your thinking by using objects that you think will "fit"

  • Use objects that are attractive, attention getting and playful for the group

  • Keep the environment relaxed and playful

  • Limit the session and be mindful of time

  • Choose a recorder - display ideas on large chart paper for group to see

Ways you Might Apply It

1. State and Clarify the Challenge

2. Review guidelines for divergent thinking

3. Explain Forced Connections by giving an example

4. Introduce and object to the group and ask:

“When you look at this (picture or object) what ideas come to your mind to solve this problem?”

5. Have group generate options stimulated by the object

6. Repeat several times with different objects

7. Check in with client

8. Take next steps
