Benefits in the Government:

Currently Puerto Rico has one member in Congress who has no voting rights and can only voice opinions. If Puerto Rico becomes a state they will get anywhere from five to twenty members in Congress all with formal voting rights along with members in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Common disputes over statehood:

Some common questions that are produced over statehood include the idea that Puerto Rico will lose its vibrant traditions if they become a state. This isn't necessarily true and can be corroborated by looking at Hawaii. This island group became part of the U.S. and kept its traditions along with spreading them to the interested visitors.

Puerto Rico's economical benefit:

Puerto Rico's population wants statehood.

Upon joining the Union, Puerto Rico will gain debt assistance through an orderly debt write-down in return for a smaller yearly tax. This write down will help to decrease its enormous poor class and increase its tiny work force. All of these things will help to reimburse Puerto Rico's faltering economy.

Recently a poll was taken stating that 61% of Puerto Rico's population voted for statehood, their prime reasons were an improved economy and living conditions.

Puerto Rico should be the 51st state.

Law making disputes:

Puerto Rican citizens also want statehood because of the un-equal law distribution they receive. For example, any law the U.S. legislature makes, Puerto Rico can't vote for it or against it because they are not currently a state. But, if they became a state they would get the same law application and voting opportunities.

The discussion over Puerto Rico's statehood is an argument that many people have become involved in. I have taken the side of statehood and am backing it through the economic benefit to both the U.S. and Puerto Rico's economy, and the great boost in living for all of Puerto Rico's poor citizens. May your decision be affected by this.

Conclusion:

How the U.S economy would benefit:

The U.S. currently pays $22 billion to keep Puerto Rico as a commonwealth. If Puerto Rico became a state it would only cost $5,2 billion and every year after we would actually gain $2 BILLION in tax revenue and an additional $10 million in tourism income, all of which would help lower our large debt drastically.

The debate over Puerto Rico's statehood is an ongoing argument. I think that Puerto Rico should become the 51st state because of the economic benefit to both the U.S. and Puerto Rico's economy. As well as the great advantage for the 1.5 million people living in poverty there who would be aided greatly once joining the U.S.

Puerto Rico's citizens will benefit.

If Puerto Rico becomes a state, its citizens will gain improved healthcare, the opportunity to vote, and federal tax returns. They will also gain assistance with getting jobs for their large poor population making the country much more stable for itself and its citizens.
